james + associates began work for the general mills plant in 2011 beginning with site security improvements that involved routing all of the facility traffic through a single point entry and the development of a security building that serves as a control center for emergency response. james + associates’ initial work element involved the master planning of the proposed improvement in which existing access points were identified along with three other supporting service entities within the industrial campus area. the master plan included a layout as well as a narrative of the proposed plan for modifying the entrance which involves the abandonment of existing row along a public street and conversion to a private roadway, and development of easements for existing facilities to remain. a 5,800 square foot security building was also included in the masterplan to facilitate controlled access and emergency operation. james + associates served as the design lead for this project and was responsible for coordination of the design and associated services which are listed below:

james + associates had the privilege of working with tdot to produce repair plans for the replacement of the decks on two of the most heavily traveled bridges in the state of tennessee. i-24 over main and woodland streets are located near nissan stadium, downtown nashville in davidson county. this is the first use of full-depth, prestressed deck panels in a high adt location in the state of tennessee. we worked closely with tdot in developing the new concept from design through construction.
distinctive aspects of the project included developing closure details for precast element connections and the use of non-typical high strength grouts. the existing prestressed i-beams were left to support the new panels. this presented a couple of unique challenges in developing details; providing proper edge support to the panels while dealing with the existing projecting stirrups. the narrow width of the beam tops required a smaller closure pour gap than the snow creek project. this created the opportunity to develop details that would provide for sufficient development of reinforcement through the pour joints. the overall scope of this project included complete closure of i24 during weekends to facilitate panel installation. the majority of traffic lanes reopened on mondays to service weekday traffic; removal of existing asphalt; removal of existing concrete deck slab (existing beams were left in place); the casting in place of cantilevers; repairing concrete spalls on abutments, bents, and slope pavements; installing precast and prestressed full-depth deck panels; installing high-performance non-shrink and epoxy grout; maintaining existing bridge width; utilizing a standard std-1-1ss bridge rail; transitioning asphalt roadway approaches; modifying existing bridge drains; repair of existing bridge drain piping network; removal of existing guardrail at bridge ends and the addition of new tdot standard guardrail at bridge ends; and the stabilization of shoulders on the approaches and texture coating bridge rail and overhangs. the new bridge over main street has a length of 204’-7”. the new bridge over woodland street has a length of 189’-4”. both bridges have an out-to-out width of 122’-0”. both are composed of stub-on-pile abutments, a 15 beam cross-section (type ii & iii prestressed i-beams), and 10” thick deck (panel system), 3” asphalt overlay, and std-1-1ss bridge railing. this project was the american council of engineering companies of tennessee 2013 engineering excellence grand award. |

(dcci) in late january of 2011 for the music city center project. dcci was the steel erection company for the 16 acre, 1.2 million square foot convention center featuring a 350,000 sq ft exhibit hall and a 57,000 sq ft grand ballroom. the building approximately contains 11,000 tons of erected steel, 12,000 tons of rebar and at its tallest point, the corner of 5th avenue and demonbreun street, the building will be approximately 15 stories tall. while on site during the first month of work, field crew chiefs were able to form a relationship between the many on-site and off-site foremen, pointing out many areas that our equipment and knowledge could assist. not only were the surveys challenging but the site locations were even more so. in most cases the task at hand involved point harnesses, great heights, tight areas, motorized lifts, and congested areas. surveys utilized but were not limited to: 3-wire level loops, anchor bolt as-builts, anchor bolt layouts, shim plates, edge of steel as-builts, column line layouts, steel plumb survey, monitoring elevation lifts, miscellaneous erected steel as-built & layout, cantilever elevations check, and top of steel elevations. |
